Mild tooth sensitivity after a filling is normal — but what should you actually expect? Here is when to wait it out, when to call your dentist, and how to manage it.
You had a filling done. The numbness wore off. And now the tooth aches when you sip cold water, or feels uncomfortable when you bite down. Is this normal?
Usually yes — but knowing the timeline and the warning signs makes a real difference.
What is normal after a tooth filling
For the first few days to a week after a filling, mild discomfort is completely expected. Common normal experiences:
- Cold sensitivity — sharper than usual when drinking cold water or eating ice cream.
- Mild pressure soreness — biting on that side feels a little tender.
- Brief twinges — short, sharp sensations that fade within a second or two.
- Heat sensitivity — less common, but possible.
The reason: the dentist has cleaned out a cavity and bonded a new filling. The nerve inside the tooth has been disturbed and is recovering. The bite has changed slightly. All of this settles within days.
The normal timeline
| Time after filling | What you should feel |
|---|---|
| Day 1–2 | Mild to moderate cold sensitivity. Tenderness when biting. |
| Day 3–5 | Sensitivity decreasing. Bite settling. |
| Day 7–10 | Sensitivity should be gone or minimal. |
| Week 2+ | Tooth feels completely normal. |
When to wait it out
If your toothache or sensitivity is mild, not getting worse, and fading day by day, just give it time:
- Use a sensitive-teeth toothpaste (Sensodyne, Colgate Sensitive, etc.) twice daily.
- Avoid very cold or very hot drinks for 3–5 days.
- Take standard pain relief (paracetamol or ibuprofen) for the first day or two if needed.
- Chew on the other side until the soreness settles.
This covers 80% of post-filling experiences.
When to call the dentist
Some symptoms are not normal and need a quick check. Walk in or call us if you have:
- Severe pain that wakes you at night — could indicate the cavity was deeper than visible and the nerve is inflamed.
- Pain that is getting worse instead of better after the first 5–7 days.
- Pain when biting that does not settle — often the filling is sitting slightly high on the bite. A 5-minute polish to lower it usually resolves the pain immediately.
- Sharp, shooting pain that lasts more than a few seconds — possible nerve involvement.
- Throbbing, persistent pain at rest — sign the nerve may be inflamed (rarely, leading to a root canal).
- Visible swelling of the gum or face — call urgently, this can indicate infection.
At Tooth-Tastic in Al Barsha 1 we welcome walk-ins for post-filling concerns — many issues are resolved in a 5–10 minute visit.
What causes prolonged pain after a filling
If the pain has not settled by 2 weeks, the most likely causes are:
- High bite — the filling is fractionally taller than the surrounding teeth, so it takes the impact every time you bite. Easily adjusted with a quick polish.
- Deeper cavity than expected — the decay was very close to the nerve. The nerve is irritated but may settle over weeks to months. Most cases recover with no further treatment.
- Pulpitis (irreversible nerve inflammation) — the nerve was too damaged to recover. A root canal is needed to save the tooth. This is uncommon but happens with very deep cavities.
- Cracked tooth — sometimes a small crack only becomes apparent after a filling. May need a crown.
A free check-up will identify which of these you have.
Tooth sensitivity after filling — a special note
Cold sensitivity for up to 2 weeks is normal. Cold sensitivity that is severe, lingering, or worsening can indicate the nerve is recovering more slowly. Use sensitivity toothpaste consistently, avoid extreme temperatures, and book a check if it has not faded by week 3.
When to expect to feel completely normal
For most patients, by 2 weeks after a filling, the tooth feels exactly like the rest of your teeth. If yours doesn’t, walk in — the fix is usually quick and simple.
Tooth-Tastic Al Barsha 1 — walk-ins welcome Sat–Thu, 11am–11pm. Free check-up. Composite fillings from AED 240. We are 5 minutes from Mall of the Emirates.
