One of the most common questions patients ask — and one of the most commonly ignored recommendations in dentistry — is how often you should get your teeth professionally cleaned.
The honest answer is: it depends on your individual situation. But most people need it more often than they think, and less often than they fear.
The Standard Recommendation: Every 6 Months
For most adults with good oral health and no specific risk factors, professional teeth cleaning every 6 months is the standard recommendation. This schedule allows your dentist to:
- Remove tartar (calcified plaque) that daily brushing can’t touch
- Catch early signs of decay or gum disease before they become problems
- Polish away surface stains
- Give your gums a reset to prevent inflammation from building up
Six months is not arbitrary — it roughly matches the typical rate at which plaque mineralises into tartar and at which early gum inflammation can progress without intervention.
Who Needs More Frequent Cleaning?
Some patients benefit from more frequent professional cleaning — every 3 or 4 months rather than every 6. This typically includes people with:
- Active gum disease (periodontitis) — more frequent cleaning is a core part of managing the condition
- High susceptibility to tartar buildup — some people produce more calculus faster
- Smoking — significantly increases gum disease and staining risk
- Diabetes — linked to higher risk of gum disease complications
- A history of gum disease — even after successful treatment, closer monitoring helps prevent recurrence
- Orthodontic appliances — braces and fixed retainers trap plaque in difficult places
- Dry mouth — reduces saliva’s natural protective effects
If any of these apply to you, we’ll recommend an appropriate schedule after assessing your gums at your first visit.
What Actually Happens During a Professional Cleaning?
A professional teeth cleaning is more than just polishing. The appointment typically includes:
Scaling
Using fine instruments (and often ultrasonic scaling), your hygienist or dentist removes tartar (hardened plaque) from all tooth surfaces — including below the gumline where your toothbrush can’t reach.
Tartar cannot be removed by brushing no matter how diligently you clean. It requires professional instruments.
Polishing
After scaling, a polishing paste removes surface stains and gives teeth a smooth, clean feel. The smooth surface also makes it harder for new plaque to adhere quickly.
Gum Assessment
Your gum health is checked — pocket depths measured in more thorough appointments, signs of inflammation noted. This is how early gum disease is caught.
X-rays (where indicated)
Regular bitewing X-rays (typically once a year) let us see between teeth and check bone levels — areas impossible to assess visually.
Advice
Your dentist will point out any areas of concern and give advice tailored to your home care routine.
A full hygiene session at Tooth-Tastic takes around 20 minutes. More detail is on our teeth cleaning service page.
Does Professional Cleaning Hurt?
For patients with healthy gums, professional cleaning is generally very comfortable — most people find it relaxing.
Patients with inflamed gums or significant tartar buildup may find it more sensitive, especially around the gumline. This is usually because the gums are already irritated. As gum health improves with regular cleaning, sensitivity during the appointment decreases significantly.
For patients who are particularly sensitive, we can use topical anaesthetic gel on the gums. Let us know and we’ll make the appointment as comfortable as possible.
Can You Wait Until Something Hurts?
Waiting until you have pain or obvious symptoms before booking a dental clean is one of the most common — and most costly — mistakes in dental health.
Most dental disease progresses silently. Early gum disease causes no pain. Small cavities cause no pain. It’s only when disease has advanced significantly that symptoms typically appear.
A 45-minute cleaning session twice a year is genuinely preventative — it interrupts the disease process before it requires expensive treatment.
Home Cleaning vs Professional Cleaning
Home cleaning (brushing and flossing) is essential and can’t be replaced by professional appointments. But professional cleaning addresses what home care cannot:
| Home brushing & flossing | Professional cleaning | |
|---|---|---|
| Plaque removal | Effective | Effective (more thorough) |
| Tartar removal | Cannot remove tartar | Yes — only option |
| Below gumline | Limited | Yes, with proper technique |
| Frequency | Twice daily | Every 6 months (most patients) |
| Stain removal | Minimal | Polishing removes surface stains |
The best outcomes come from consistent home care plus regular professional cleaning.
