Purple teeth whitening toothpastes claim to instantly whiten teeth. Here is what dentists actually think — and what works instead.
You have probably seen them on TikTok and Instagram: bright purple toothpastes promising to “instantly whiten teeth.” The pitch is appealing — brush twice and your teeth look brighter. But does it actually work?
Here is the dentist answer.
What purple toothpaste actually does
Purple whitening toothpastes use a basic colour-theory trick. On the colour wheel, purple is the opposite of yellow. So when you coat slightly yellow teeth with a purple film, the eye briefly perceives them as whiter — the same way purple shampoos cancel out brassy tones in blonde hair.
The result:
- A temporary visual cancellation of yellow tones — minutes, not hours.
- No actual whitening of the tooth structure.
- The effect rinses off almost immediately.
- Once the purple is gone, your teeth are exactly the same shade they were.
It is a cosmetic illusion, not a chemical whitening.
Why this matters
If you have intrinsic staining (the deep, in-tooth discolouration from coffee, tea, age, certain medications), purple toothpaste will do nothing. Real whitening requires a bleaching agent (hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide) that penetrates the enamel.
Purple toothpaste does not contain a bleaching agent. So it cannot bleach.
Does that make it useless?
Not necessarily. Used as a daily toothpaste, purple toothpastes:
- Provide the same fluoride and cleaning benefits as regular toothpaste
- Give a subtle brightening illusion that some patients enjoy
- Are not harmful in normal use
But marketing them as a teeth whitening treatment is misleading. They are tinted toothpaste, not a whitening product.
What actually works
If you want real, visible, lasting whitening, you need a peroxide-based treatment:
- In-clinic professional whitening — single session, dentist-supervised. At Tooth-Tastic in Al Barsha 1, our Philips Zoom whitening is AED 550.
- Take-home kits with custom trays — slower but effective when used daily for 1–2 weeks. AED 1,000 at Tooth-Tastic.
- Professional whitening strips prescribed by a dentist — significantly stronger than drugstore strips.
The bottom line
Purple toothpastes are fine to use, but do not expect them to actually whiten your teeth. They are a temporary visual filter, not a treatment.
If you want a real shade change, walk in for a free check-up at our Al Barsha 1 clinic. We will tell you honestly what your teeth need — and the cost up front before any treatment begins.
