What happens at your braces removal appointment, how teeth feel after braces, and why a retainer matters. A complete patient guide from Tooth-Tastic Dubai.
After 18–24 months of monthly adjustments, the day finally arrives — your braces are coming off. What actually happens at the appointment? How will your teeth look and feel? And what comes next?
Here is exactly what to expect at the braces removal appointment and beyond.
At the appointment: braces removal
The removal appointment usually takes 45–60 minutes. The process:
- Bracket release — your dentist uses a special tool to gently squeeze each bracket off the tooth. There is pressure but no pain. Anaesthesia is not needed.
- Adhesive removal — the bonding glue is carefully polished off each tooth surface so no rough patches remain.
- Cleaning and polish — your teeth are professionally cleaned to remove any plaque or staining that built up around the brackets.
- Fluoride treatment — a quick fluoride application to help remineralise the enamel.
- Impressions for retainer — a digital scan or impression so your custom retainer is ready quickly.
You walk out with smooth, brace-free teeth.
How teeth after braces actually look and feel
Right after removal, expect:
- Smooth, brace-free teeth — strange feeling for the first 24 hours.
- Slight sensitivity — teeth may feel a little sensitive to temperature for 1–2 days as they adjust to no longer being held by wires.
- Slightly discoloured patches — uncommon, but if oral hygiene was difficult during treatment, you may see slightly lighter or darker spots where brackets were. These usually polish out or fade. Severe spots may need a small filling or whitening.
- Possible mild gum tenderness — gums sometimes need a few days to settle as you start brushing the previously bracketed surfaces normally again.
By the end of the first week, your teeth should feel completely normal — but straighter than before.
Why a retainer is essential immediately after braces
Here is what most patients don’t realise: without a retainer, your teeth will start drifting back toward their original position within days.
The bone around your teeth needs months to remodel and stabilise the new alignment. During that time, the slightest pressure from your tongue, lips, or bite can shift teeth back. Patients who skip the retainer often find their teeth crooked again within 1–2 years — wasting all the time and money invested in braces.
At Tooth-Tastic in Al Barsha 1, we offer every retainer type:
- Hawley retainer — the classic acrylic plate with a metal front wire. Removable, durable, lasts 5+ years.
- Clear / Vivera-style retainer — virtually invisible, looks like an Invisalign aligner. Replace every 1–3 years.
- Fixed (lingual) retainer — a thin wire bonded behind the front teeth. Invisible from the front, no compliance needed.
Many patients have a fixed retainer behind the front teeth plus a clear removable retainer for nights — the best of both worlds. See our dental retainers page for full details.
Post-braces wear schedule
The standard schedule:
- Months 1–6 — wear the removable retainer 22 hours per day (everything except eating and brushing).
- Months 6–12 — gradually reduce to nights only.
- Years 1+ — wear at night long-term (forever, ideally).
If a fixed retainer was bonded behind your front teeth, that handles long-term retention while you wear the removable retainer for the upper teeth at night.
What about whitening or veneers after braces?
Many patients want to brighten their straight new smile. Wait at least 2–4 weeks after braces removal before professional whitening — this lets the enamel re-mineralise and reduces sensitivity. Then book a Philips Zoom whitening session (AED 550) for visible results in one visit.
If you have a few minor cosmetic issues that braces could not fix (tooth shape, small chips), composite or porcelain veneers can complete the smile.
Book your retainer fitting
If you finished braces years ago and stopped wearing your retainer — your teeth may have drifted. A fresh retainer can hold the current position and prevent further movement.
